Among the veterans returning to Normandy in June will be a man with a name fit for a hero - George Cross.
For more than six decades, the former bombardier has regretted never making the pilgrimage back to the sands where he had to bury fallen comrades with his bare hands.
Now, with his 100th birthday approaching in May, he is delighted to have the chance at last.
Yesterday he gave thanks to Daily Mail readers who had contributed £70,000 to the cause before yesterday's announcement that the veterans' return would be funded by the lottery.
'It is a great victory for us,' he said. 'It's about time too. We felt let badly let down and abandoned by this Government, but at least it has now had the decency to accept it was out of step with public opinion.
